Ningtam project

(Open letter to organizations, activists, and other parties interested in addressing domestic violence, LGBTQ concerns, and Tibetan welfare).

I’m writing to ask for your thoughts or suggestions about an organization I would like to start in the U.S., to serve diaspora Tibetans here (I would just like to help start it, and let a small group of Tibetans and other qualified persons take over and run it).  I see it having relevance outside the U.S., but since this is where I am based, I am starting here.

Its aim would be to serve as an awareness program around domestic violence (spousal and child), as well as LGBTQ struggles (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer), among Tibetan youth and adults.  One of its primary functions would be to serve as an intermediary between Tibetan communities and the numerous, well-established services already available to domestic violence victims and LGBTQ persons struggling with coming out of the closet.

I believe this project would contribute to the welfare of multiple communities, and is much needed in the Tibetan community, as it members deal with various degrees of alienation from community organizations serving Asian immigrants.  I can describe more of my thoughts around how to implement such a project and hire creative and motivated staff, if anyone has time or interest in being a part of planning.

The project is tentatively titled Ningtam (ning –> heart or soul, tam –> conversation, tale).  In Tibetan, you tell your ningtam to someone you trust.
